SHAKU Family Martial Arts Ladysmith school owner and Chief Instructor is Sifu Cathal Walsh.

Sifu Cathal Walsh is an accomplished martial arts instructor, having achieved a 5th degree Black Belt (Master) in the art of Shaolin Kempo Kung-Fu. He has been a Bronze and Silver Medallist at the Tiger Balm Internationals, the Western Canadian Martial Arts Championships and (in 2006) at the World Martial Arts Games.

For ten years Sifu Cathal operated one of Canada 's most successful family martial arts schools, Island Kung-Fu in Duncan, guiding the instruction for students young and young at heart!  In 2008 Sifu Cathal passed on his school to student Sifu Ian Carke in order to pursue the teaching and coaching of professional martial artists across Canada and to bring the philosophy and benefits of SHAKU martial arts to even more communities. 

His leadership has been further developed through fifteen years experience working as a teacher and principal in elementary and middle schools in British Columbia, and also serving as a Provincial Standards Coordinator for the BC Ministry of Education. Sifu Cathal's published material in the areas of safety, bullying prevention, instructional methodology, leadership and curriculum are actively used by martial arts schools in Canada as well as numerous public and Independent schools.

In 2010 Sifu Cathal decided to once again return to the teaching of martial arts to students. After exploring numerous potential locations, Sifu Cathal chose Ladysmith BC believing that Ladysmith's strong sense of community and family values will be a great match for the philosophy and benefits of SHAKU Family Martial Arts.
