Basic Orientation Program

All students aged seven years and older begin their journey at SHAKU Family Martial Arts in the Basic Orientation Program.  This course of study is generally completed within four to six months of commencing training although up to twelve months is allocated to allow students to progress at a comfortable pace based on individual needs and abilities.  

The Basic course provides each student and family with foundation skills in the areas of fitness, self-defense, martial arts technique and character education.  The program is organized into monthly training modules that introduce, develop and reinforce knowledge, skills and attitudes to students.  Students are also provided with a course outline to help with steady progress and to prepare for monthly progress evaluations.

Students enrolled in the basic orientation course are often new to martial arts and uncertain as to what to expect.  The benefit of having a specific course for new students is that every student receives the personal instruction and attention necessary to be successful.  Advancement from this course is determined on an individual basis.

Basic Orientation also provides new students, their families and SHAKU Family Martial Arts instructors’ sufficient time to determine if the training being offered and the student are a “good fit” for both the student and the school.   The goal for each student, during Basic Orientation, is to qualify for SHAKU’s Black Belt & Leadership Programs.
