There are two types of discipline
that contribute greatly to one's achievement of success and
happiness in life. The first is external (or
parent) discipline. This is our decision to follow the
rules of others in order to achieve desired results.
For children it means doing what they are asked the first
time! For adults, it may mean getting to work on time as
your supervisor has asked you to. Children who struggle with
external discipline often need numerous reminders to do the
same tasks! Improvement in external discipline is achieved
when students learn to associate benefits for themselves and
others by following rules.
Once external discipline is
achieved, the next stage is internal, or commonly
referred to as self-discipline. Self-discipline means
doing the right thing without being told. For children
it means completing household chores, homework and other
responsibilities without a parents constant reminding.
For adults, it may mean following a healthy diet and
exercise plan without the need for a personal trainer
telling you to! As with external discipline,
self-discipline is achieved when students develop a positive
correlation between their actions and the achievement of
reward. Over time, being self-disciplined is less of
an "effort" as it becomes simply the way we live
our lives.
There are many benefits to
be gained in our personal life, school, work and
relationships by living with discipline. At SHAKU
Family Martial Arts, our programs require disciplined
attendance, effort, practice at home and completion of tasks
that instill the value of discipline in the mind of each
student.
We define self-discipline
for our students as "rules we choose to follow that
help us achieve our goals." Self-discipline is a
positive attitude and an important success skill for life.
